St.
Andrews was for many centuries the centre of political and religious life in Scotland.
The university is one of the oldest in Britain. Turn any corner and you are rubbing
shoulders with tales of murder, martyrdom and intrigue.
The holy
relics of the patron saint of Scotland, St. Andrews, were first landed here. Beautifully
preserved medieval houses line the streets. The ruins of the castle and cathedral
stand testimony to the town's turbulent past.
Golf was banned
in St. Andrews during the 1400's as King James 11 wanted more time spent on archery
practice. Centuries later the rules of the game were debated and decided on by
the golfing fraternity in the town. Today these same rules are adhered to by golfers
all over the world.
Long sandy beaches, where 'Chariots of Fire'was
filmed, border the world famous golf courses. The winding coast and rolling landscape
hide attractive fishing harbours, palaces, castles and picturesque villages.
All
this and much more within easy reach of Greyfriars.
